Less than a week into the 2020 presidential campaign of US Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), she finds herself dealing with the remnants of a previous intimate relationship that caused public scandal.
Former San Francisco mayor, Willie Brown, wrote a terse piece in the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday alleging that he and Harris had an extramarital affair when she was a young, up-and-coming political figure and he was an older states person, at the height of his political power. In addition, he claims that his influence helped her gain more entryway into Bay Area politics.

Brown penned:
I’ve been peppered with calls from the national media about my “relationship” with Kamala Harris, particularly since it became obvious that she was going to run for president. Most of them, I have not returned.
Yes, we dated. It was more than 20 years ago. Yes, I may have influenced her career by appointing her to two state commissions when I was Assembly speaker.
The difference is that Harris is the only one who, after I helped her, sent word that I would be indicted if I “so much as jaywalked” while she was D.A.
And I certainly helped with her first race for district attorney in San Francisco. I have also helped the careers of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Gov. Gavin Newsom, Sen. Dianne Feinstein and a host of other politicians.

While married, but separated from his wife, Blanche Brown, Willie Brown, now 84-years-old, dated Harris (54) briefly in 1994.
The information Brown revealed is not new to the California political scene. According to the Daily Mail, it was a point of contention for opponents of Harris when she ran for San Francisco’s district attorney in 2003. When questioned if her relationship with Brown would impede her ability to unprejudiced to him, Harris responded in an earlier interview, “I don’t owe him a thing.”
Before Harris, a list of presidential candidates have been linked to questionable personal pasts. Former President Barack Obama admitted to snorting cocaine in college. The current president, Donald Trump, has been linked to at least two public extramarital affairs; one of which surfaced while he has been in office.
A freelance columnist for the newspaper, Brown dropped the write up just two days before Harris kicked off her campaign in her hometown of Oakland. She did not respond to his claims nor did she miss a beat in campaigning.
On Sunday, thousands attended campaign commencement. In the week, Harris has already raised over a $1 million.
