Prison Abolition. What is it and why is it necessary?

With the George Floyd protests, there’s been a call to defund the police. Before, there’s been a movement to abolish prisons.

Police killings and mass incarceration are familiar topics for African Americans and the justice system. But, with the heightened focus on reforming police departments, and even defunding them, there has been advocacy before that: abolish prisons. Jaaye Person-Lynn, a prison abolitionist who is a Howard Law graduate and Los Angeles-based Civil Rights attorney, explains exactly what that is, and how society will benefit.
