States that were the hardest hit in the initial wave of coronavirus, are now hard press to remain healthy.
A joint announcement from the governors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut issued a travel advisory Wednesday for certain visitors. The order requires people arriving from states with high coronavirus rates to quarantine for 14 days.
In an executive order issued by New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) travelers entering New York from a state with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents, or higher than a 10% test positivity rate, over a seven day rolling average, will be required to quarantine for a period of 14 days consistent with Department of Health regulations for quarantine.
As of Wednesday, the advisory applies to Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah and Texas. New York has also been cited as one of three states to be on track to contain Covid-19, reported a group of scientists, experts and technologists partnering in the Covid ACT Now campaign.
Added, NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio also announced that local beaches would be opening on July 1 for swimming.Though Gov. Cuomo opened up all state beaches during Memorial Day weekend, De Blasio has held off on reopening NYC beaches for swimming and has limited them to walking, sunbathing, and “wading” in the water.
A commitment to flatten the curve
The announcements are a 180-degree difference from a few months ago. In the tri-state area, and New York City in particular, was the epicenter of the pandemic. So much so, in late March, New York became the global and national hotspot for Covid-19, with thousands of reported cases and a spike in deaths.
At one point, President Donald Trump considered placing the tri-state area, New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, under a quarantine. To quell travel from nearby hotspots Rhode Island police stopped vehicles with New York license plates. In these state-sanctioned border patrols, Florida directed all travelers from the tri-state area to isolate or quarantine for two weeks.
After months of strict lockdown rules, widespread testing and attempts at contact tracing, reported cases are now under control in the tri-state area and the region. Since new cases in the region are on the decline this past week. Now states in the South and West are seeing what Dr. Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, called a “disturbing surge” in cases.
