A reparations task force implemented in California recently made a huge decision in determining what residents will receive restorative compensation.
The task force, focusing on African Americans who are descendants of persons enslaved in the United States will use lineage as the basis rather than race. Consisting of nine members, the vote, 5-4 was slim in final results.
At the core was deciding how could the state identity the accurate lineage versus a bill on race. At the heart of the matter was how could one trace their ancestors directly to slavery; especially if California did not legally enforce slavery. We speak with Dame Crawford on the issue.
